The UK Standard Visitor visa is decided almost entirely on your documents and online application answers, so completeness matters more than for visas with a routine interview stage. Everything you submit has to support the 'genuine visitor' test: that you'll do a permitted activity, can fund the trip without working or claiming benefits, and will leave at the end of your visit. Apply online up to three months before you travel, and confirm every fee and figure on GOV.UK, since they change.
Identity and application basics

- Invitation letter (if visiting family or friends)From your host, stating the relationship, purpose and length of the visit — strengthens a family/friends visit application.
- Details of any UK-based family membersThe application asks about family members already living in the UK; disclose them accurately.
Financial evidence
- Evidence you can support yourself and any dependantsRecent bank statements, payslips, or savings evidence covering your trip costs — the exact amount isn't fixed, but it must credibly cover the visit.
- Evidence you can pay for your return or onward journeyShow funds for the journey home or to your next destination, separate from your day-to-day spending money.
- Sponsor's financial evidence (if someone else is funding the trip)A letter from your sponsor plus their bank statements or payslips if a third party is covering your costs.
- Trip cost breakdown and annual incomeThe online form asks you to estimate total trip costs and declare your annual income — keep these consistent with your bank evidence.
Ties to home and travel history
- Evidence of employment or studyAn employer letter confirming your role, salary, and approved leave, or proof of enrolment if you're a student — supports that you'll return.
- Evidence of family, property or business tiesAnything that supports a genuine intention to leave the UK at the end of your visit — property documents, a family situation, or a business you run.
- Travel history for the last ten yearsThe application asks about international travel over the past decade; be accurate, since previous visas and visits are checked.
- Criminal or immigration offence historyDisclose any previous convictions or immigration offences (including any country) honestly — non-disclosure is a common, avoidable refusal reason.
Tips
- Apply up to three months before you travel — processing typically takes around three weeks after your biometric appointment, but build in a buffer.
- Budget for the right fee tier: £135 for a standard 6-month visit, up to £234 for the 11-12 month academic or medical routes, and £506/£903/£1,128 for the 2/5/10-year long-term options if you travel to the UK regularly.
- Match every number across the form and your bank evidence — inconsistent trip costs, income, or dates are one of the most common reasons for extra scrutiny.
- A visitor visa does not permit paid or unpaid work (aside from narrow permitted paid engagements), claiming public benefits, or getting married or registering a civil partnership.
- If you're sponsored, the sponsor's letter and bank evidence should read as consistent with your own — mismatched stories between applicant and sponsor are a red flag.
