A UK visa decision can sit in the queue for weeks. If a start date, course, or job offer is time-sensitive, the Home Office sells two paid add-ons — the Priority Visa Service and the Super Priority Visa Service — that move your application to the front of the line. What priority services actually buy you
Priority and super priority are not separate visa categories. You’re still applying for the same route — Skilled Worker, Student, Family, Settlement, and so on — you’re just paying extra for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) to prioritise the decision on your existing application. You choose the service at the time you apply, not after you’ve already submitted; it can’t usually be bolted on retroactively.

How fast is “faster”
- Priority Service: a decision “usually within 5 working days” of your appointment/biometric enrolment (or document submission for postal/eVisa routes). For Family visa applications made from outside the UK, and for citizenship applications, the priority target extends to up to 30 working days instead.
- Super Priority Service: a decision “usually by the end of the next working day.” If your biometrics appointment falls on a weekend or bank holiday, the target becomes 2 working days after the appointment. Super priority is not offered for citizenship applications at all — citizenship only has the (slower) priority option.
Both targets are best-effort, not contractual. If UKVI needs more evidence, has to verify something with another government department, or your case turns out to be complex, the clock can extend well past the advertised window — and the Home Office states plainly that you won’t usually get a refund just because the decision took longer. Who can (and can’t) use it

- Availability isn’t guaranteed centre-by-centre — UKVI can temporarily pull the service at a specific visa application centre without much notice, and it isn’t offered for every visa type or every country.

Is it worth paying for?

Priority services make the most sense when:
- You have a fixed, hard start date (course start, job start, contract deadline) that a 3-week-plus standard wait would jeopardise.
- Your documents are complete and clean — priority speed only helps if UKVI doesn’t need to come back to you for more evidence, which resets any effective advantage.
- You’ve confirmed your specific route and application centre actually offers the service before you pay, since it’s non-refundable if things run long anyway.
If your timeline has slack, the standard service achieves the same outcome for £500–£1,000 less per applicant.

Can I add priority service after I’ve already submitted my application? Generally no — you select and pay for it as part of the application itself. If you didn’t select it initially, contact UKVI directly to ask whether an upgrade is possible for your specific route; it isn’t guaranteed.
