Overview: the France Tourist Visa

A short-stay visa for tourism, visiting family or friends, and other non-business leisure travel. The single biggest factor in approval is convincing the officer you will return home.

A top EU destination for students and skilled workers, with a large public-university system, the Talent Passport route for skilled and business profiles, and the France-Visas portal as the single official gateway for every long-stay visa application.

Who this visa is for

Holidays, family visits, sightseeing and short personal trips. Stays of 30–180 days, often on a multiple-entry visa valid 1–10 years.

Key things to know about applying in France

  • Non-EU/EEA nationals staying more than 90 days need a long-stay visa (VLS-TS) applied for through the official France-Visas portal, not a Schengen short-stay visa.
  • Student applicants on a full degree program must complete the Campus France procedure before applying for the VLS-TS "étudiant" visa on France-Visas.
  • The VLS-TS student visa doubles as a residence permit for its first year but must be validated online (and often with an OFII medical visit) within three months of arrival, or it becomes invalid.
  • Skilled workers typically apply through the Talent Passport (Passeport Talent) multi-year residence permit rather than a single-entry work visa, once a French employer or qualifying activity is confirmed.

The application process, step by step

  • Confirm you meet the eligibility criteria and choose the correct visa category.
  • Gather your documents and check them against the official requirements.
  • Complete and submit the official application and pay the required fees.
  • Attend biometrics and, where required, the visa interview.
  • Track your application and prepare for travel once approved.

Common reasons applications are refused

  • Weak ties to your home country, so the officer doubts you will return.
  • Unclear trip purpose or an itinerary that does not match your stated plans.
  • Insufficient or unexplained funds for the trip.
