Germany’s Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte) has become the main entry point for Kenyans who want to work in Germany without already holding a signed job contract. Unlike the standard skilled-worker visa, it lets you travel to Germany and job-hunt in person for up to a year — but Nairobi applicants need to clear a specific points threshold and a financial-proof bar before the German Embassy will issue it.
Two routes into the German labour market
Route 1 — Recognized skilled worker. If your foreign qualification (degree or vocational certificate) is already recognized as equivalent in Germany, you can apply directly as a skilled worker. You skip the points system entirely and only need to show enough funds to cover your job search (German Embassy Nairobi).
Route 2 — Opportunity Card (points-based). Everyone else needs 6 points minimum from:
| Factor | Points |
|---|---|
| Foreign university degree or 2+ years of recognized vocational training | prerequisite, not points |
| Partially recognized qualification | 4 |
| Working in a shortage occupation | 1 |
| 2+ years relevant experience (of last 5) | 2 |
| 5+ years relevant experience (of last 7) | 3 |
| German B1/B2 or higher | 2–3 |
| English C1 (in addition to German) | 1 |
| Age 35 or under | 2 |
| Age 35–40 | 1 |
| 6+ months prior legal residence in Germany | 1 |
| Spouse/partner who also qualifies | 1 |
You also need German at A1 or English at B2 as a baseline, regardless of points earned elsewhere.
Financial proof — the number that trips up most applicants
Nairobi requires proof of at least €1,091 per month of intended stay:
- €3,309 for the minimum 91-day Opportunity Card validity
- €13,092 for the full 12-month validity
This can be a blocked account (Sperrkonto) with a bank confirmation stating the deposit and monthly release amount, or a formal, creditworthy third-party sponsorship letter. Open the blocked account well before your embassy appointment — international transfers into German blocked-account providers commonly take 1–2 weeks to clear and confirm.
Documents the Nairobi embassy actually asks for
- Passport + photocopy of the data page (plus a valid Kenyan residence permit if you’re a third-country national applying from Nairobi, e.g. from Burundi, Somalia, Eritrea, Sudan, or Seychelles)
- Signed application form and two biometric photos on white background
- Gapless CV and a self-written motivation letter (German or English) naming target job areas, cities, and — if you don’t speak German — why German isn’t required for your target role
- Qualification recognition evidence: anabin printout, ZAB statement of comparability, or a formal recognition notice
- Language certificates from an ALTE-accredited provider (Goethe-Institut and ÖSD are listed as recognized in Kenya; TOEFL accepted for English) dated within 12 months
- Proof of health insurance valid for the full stay
- Certified translations for any document not already in German or English
Applications go through the online consular portal only (digital.diplo.de) — paper submissions are no longer accepted — and you’ll be invited to book a biometric appointment once your documents clear initial review.
Fees and timing
The visa fee is €75, paid in Kenyan Shillings at your appointment. Realistic processing from Nairobi runs around two months, sometimes longer; the embassy explicitly asks applicants not to chase status updates during that window, so plan your job search and travel dates with slack.
Once you land
The Opportunity Card permits trial work or part-time work up to 20 hours/week while you search — useful for covering living costs, but it is not full employment authorization. Converting to a full skilled-worker residence permit once you land a job offer is a separate, faster step once you’re already in Germany with the Card.
Corridor-specific pitfalls
- Submitting generic motivation letters without naming concrete target employers or cities is a common refusal driver — Nairobi reviewers specifically check for a credible, individualized job-search plan.
- Underestimating blocked-account setup time is the other recurring delay: start the account at least 3–4 weeks ahead of your target appointment.
- Points miscalculation (claiming shortage-occupation points without documentation) can stall a file pending clarification rather than cause outright refusal — but it adds weeks.
