The F-1 interview is brief, so your documents must instantly support your story. Assemble these before your appointment and keep them organised so you can produce any item without fumbling.

  • Form I-20 signed by you and your school
  • DS-160 confirmation pageWith the barcode the consulate will scan.
  • Passport valid 6 months beyond your stay
  • Visa appointment and SEVIS fee receipts
  • One passport photoMeeting the US 2x2 inch specification.

Financial evidence

  • Bank statements covering tuition and living costs
  • Affidavit of supportIf a sponsor is funding you, with their proof of funds.
  • Scholarship or assistantship lettersIf applicable.

Academic and ties documents

  • Transcripts and diplomas
  • Standardised test scoresTOEFL, IELTS, GRE or GMAT as required.
  • Evidence of ties to your home countryFamily, property or career plans showing you'll return.

Tips

  • Make sure the funding amount you show matches the figure on your I-20.
  • Bring originals plus a copy of each document.
  • Practise explaining your funding and post-study plans out loud before the interview.
