US F-1 Student Visa Interview Questions & Answers
The F-1 interview is short and intent-focused. The officer wants to confirm you are a genuine student, that you can fund your studies, and that you intend to return home after graduating. Answer briefly, back every claim with a document, and keep your story consistent.
Q1Why did you choose this university?
Give two or three concrete reasons — a specific program, faculty, ranking, or research fit — and connect them to your goals. Avoid generic praise like 'it is famous'.
Name the program and one specific detail you couldn't get at home.
Q2Why study in the United States instead of your home country?
Focus on the academic strengths and opportunities of the program, not on immigration or lifestyle. Show you researched alternatives and chose deliberately.
Never imply you want to stay in the US permanently.
Q3Who is sponsoring your education?
State clearly who pays — yourself, parents, a scholarship — and the amount. Have bank statements and the I-20 figure ready and make sure they match.
Know your total cost of attendance to the dollar.
Q4What are your plans after graduation?
Describe a clear career path back home that uses your US degree. Mention concrete opportunities, family or business ties that pull you back.
A specific home-country plan is your strongest proof of non-immigrant intent.
Q5How will you fund your living expenses?
Break down tuition plus living costs and show the funds exist. If a relative sponsors you, explain the relationship and their ability to pay.
Bring an affidavit of support if someone else is funding you.
Q6Do you have relatives in the United States?
Answer honestly. Having relatives is not disqualifying, but be straightforward and steer back to your study purpose and home ties.
Honesty here matters — officers can often verify family links.
Sample answers are for preparation only — always answer truthfully and in your own words.
