US Student Visa (F-1) from India: Requirements & Process

  • Updated June 2026
  • For applicants from India

India is the largest single source of F-1 students in the United States, and the process is well-trodden — which means the bar is high and consular officers are experienced. The path itself is predictable if you prepare for it.

The route at a glance

  1. Get admitted and receive your I-20 from a SEVP-approved US school.
  2. Pay the SEVIS fee and keep the receipt.
  3. Complete the DS-160 and pay the visa fee through the official portal.
  4. Book your interview at the US consulate in Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad or Kolkata.
  5. Attend the interview with your documents and a clear, consistent story.

What Indian applicants are tested on most

  • Funding. Show that you (or your sponsor) can cover the exact amount on your I-20. Education loans from Indian banks are well understood — bring the sanction letter.
  • Intent to return. Officers probe whether you’ll come back to India. Connect your US degree to a specific career path at home.
  • Course logic. Be ready to explain why this university and this program over options in India.

Common reasons Indian F-1 applications are refused

Most refusals under Section 214(b) come down to weak proof of funds, a course that doesn’t match the applicant’s background, or answers that contradict the DS-160. Each is avoidable with preparation.
